Salema Local Supermarkets
Alisuper is located in two locations in the village and also 300m up the steep hill to the west of Salema centre. This super market is a little expensive with ingredients for a simple dinner for 5 costing up to 30 Euros.
The supermarket is small and not very well stocked. They can run out of essentials like water, milk, cheese, bread and most importantly, beer!
Salema Mini Market Rua dos Pecadores Salema
The Salema Mini Market is located in the narrow street adjacent to the beach. Has a small but generally good supply of fruit, vegetables, tinned produce, bread, cheese and meats.
Managed by a slightly grumpy owner who demands the correct change and doesn't like sandy children with the Atlantic sea dripping from their limbs who simply want an ice lolly! Hang on to your spare change if you visit this establishment or if you’re brave, offer him a 50 Euro note and get the fright of your life!
Ecomarche Budens
This is a larger supermarket a short drive or a hours walk from Salema centre along the main N125.
The Ecomarche has a decent selection of fresh food, bread, tinned produce, beers and wines.
Beware some brands of English food are very costly!
There is a cash machine at the Ecomarche with a limit of 200 Euros.
There is also a 24 hour petrol station which we have found to be the cheapest in the area so fill up here if you can.
Intermarche Lagos
Around 15 minutes drive from Salema, on the outskirts of Lagos is the Intermarche a large, well stocked supermarket.
Take the N125 from Salema heading toward Lagos. When you reach the A22 motorway roundabout on the outskirts of Lagos take the first main exit towards Lagos centre. You will pass a Total petrol station on your left hand side. At the next roundabout take the second exit sign posted 'Centro' which means town centre. At the next traffic lights take a right and immediately right again onto the supermarket car park.
Lidl Lagos
Own brand store for canned and packaged goods, Lidl has a good range of fruit and vegetables.
Follow the same directions for the Intermarche as far as the second roundabout but take the third exit signposted Faro and Portimao. Continue down the hill for approximately 500m until you reach the 'Chair' roundabout. Take the second exit and you will see the Lidl on your left after another 500m. Go to the roundabout and take the third exit into the car park.
Modelo Hypermarket Lagos
Modelo is a modern hypermarket offering the largest selection of goods in the area including food and clothes. Directions are the same as Lidl as far as the Chair roundabout but take the third exit up the hill and continue approximately 1km. The entrance to the car park is immediately before the Repsol petrol station on the right hand side.
Baptista Supermarket Praia da Luz
www.supermercado-baptista.com
This is my families personal favourite supermarket offering high quality fruit, vegetables, bread and other foods. Baptista has the biggest choice of UK brands in the area including Warburton’s bread! Bapista is a little expensive so expect to pay more for imported items than you would at home.
Brands stocked include Shredded Wheat, Quorn, Dolmio, John West, Ragu, Robinsons, Jacobs Crackers, Fray Bentod, Sun Pat, Mc Vities, Quaker Oats, Golden Shread Marmalade, Dettol and aah Bisto! You can also buy a great selection of English Newspapers.
Directions to Baptista are as follows - travel down the N125 from Salema towards Lagos. After about 10km turn right at the traffic lights sign posted Praia da Luz. Follow the road into Luz for approximately 700m and go straight over the roundabout past the Bela Vista Hotel. Take the third turning on the left opposite the car park. You will find Baptisa straight ahead on your left.
Baptista is open 7 days a week between 9am till 8pm.
